Charles Lamb use of  Elia:

Charles lamb wrote a collection of essays names “Essays of Elia”. Elia in these essays is Charles lamb himself. Charles lamb was a significant English essayist and critic. He has been referred to as the Prince among English essayists. The famous works of lamb include “Tales from Shakespeare” and “Essays of Elia”.

In his collection of essays, Charles lamb shows his true command over his essays. The essays included in this collection Essays of Elia are symbolic,  personal, full of experience recollection from past (nostalgic) and full of wisdom. The way Charles lamb conveys his messages and opinions through the character of Elia are of are explained with the help of given examples. These examples are taken from some of his essays.

In one of his essays, "In the praise of chimney sweepers" he described his love for chimney-sweepers, he says,

"I have a kindly yearning towards these dim- specs poor blots innocent blackness."

Using a first-person personal narrator he describes various events related to chimney sweepers and their poor job. lamb also describes the special tea which the chimney sweeper drinks known as sassafras. He also advised people to give them money when they happen to meet you.

The essay poor relations is about relatives. Charles Lamb throws light on various aspects of relationships with relatives. He says "A poor relation is the most irrelevant thing in nature…."

Charles lamb beautifully describes the behaviour of relatives from his own personal experience. he also says,

"He offereth to go away, seeing you have company-", he says that a relative will visit your home when you are having a party or other occasion. They would be pretending that they want to go.

".... but it is indeed to stay."

Recalling from his memories he describes a funny event when his aunt insulted a guest. The guest "Mr billet" takes revenge by saying," women are superannuated."

In the essay "Dream Children: A reverie" is a fantasy essay by lamb in which he describes a dream. The readers have no idea that it is a dream they realise at the end of the essay that it was a dream. This essay talks about his tragic relationship with his wife Alice. This essay is full of nostalgia, Charles lamb is mourning the death of John and the uncle of the children. In your reality John L is representing lambs real brother also describes his loneliness in this essay.

"I found myself quietly in my Bachelor armchair."

Bachelor armchair is used as a symbol of loneliness. It can be said that Lamb essays are highly personal, symbolic, philosophical, nostalgic and full of experiences. Through the character of Elia, Charles Lamb portrays these descriptions beautifully.
