In Hard Times Lousia visited Stephen. What was the reason ? What were the results of this visit?

  Lousia meeting with Stephen:

Louisa was an important character in the novel Hard Times. She was the daughter of Thomas Gradgrind and she was married to Bounderbye, a wealthy rich man. Thomas Gradgrind tried to implement his philosophy of life in her mind. Through the character, the author has shown the failure of Mr Gradgrind’s philosophy and his utilitarian approach.

Louisa was brought up by his father in a way that she could see life through facts and without any emotion. The implantation of these ideas ruined her character. She was married to Bounderby because she thought that it would be beneficial for his brother and does not use emotions. She observes that Bounderbye was rich so she married him despite the age difference.

Stephen Blackpool, a poor hand in the factory of Bounderby, was dismissed from his job. She took pity on him and went to his home to offer him some money but he refused the money and took a few pounds with permission to return. Lousia was shocked to observe Stephen's behaviour. She realized for the first time that life is not about looking for material benefits. She was astonished when Stephen refused to borrow all the money. Then she realized that something was wrong with her upbringing. She felt emptiness. After that, she left her husband and returned to his father's home. Finally, she rejected her father’s philosophy and never married after.
