Find some of the superstitions the heath dwellers believe in, and explain what these reveal about them and their view of life.

Superstitious elements in the novel Return Of The Native:

The setting of the “Return of the native” is Egon heath. It is a rustic place. The people living here are known as heath dwellers. They are illiterate and superstitious people. They believe in magic and witchcraft.  Three are many occasions in which we can see the superstitious behaviour of people.

Susan Nunsuch is one of the characters through which the author shows their superstitious belief. Susan pricked a young beautiful girl Eustacia because she believed that she had a spell on them. She also made a doll from wax and other material and dressed the doll in the clothes worn by Eustacia and then pricked the doll. She believed that by do8ing so her son's illness would vanish.

Eustacia was a beautiful maiden. She was different from others. THE heath dwellers believe that she was a witch. Through the description of Eustacia, the author has shown the superstitious belief of heath dwellers in witchcraft.

Many occasions throughout the novel can observe where the author has shown the superstitious behaviours of heath dwellers. Susan Nuncush and Eustacia are very significant in this regard. Similarly, the philosophy behind the bonfire and using fat for adder’s bite ( snake) had its foundation in superstition.
