Joseph Letter to his sister:
Joseph Andrews was the footman of a lady Booby wife of sir Thomas booby. Joseph was a handsome young fellow and he was a very intelligent and hardworking boy. He was very handsome and charming. Lady Booby was attracted towards him she used to stare at him at the dining table she took him for a walk in Hyde Park. They would work hand-in-hand with each other. When she would become tired she would lean on his shoulders. She often said, "...joey was the handsomest and genteelest footman in the kingdom."
After the death of Sir Thomas, she confined herself in her room and no one except Mrs Slipslop and her friends was allowed to see her. On the seventh day, she called Joseph to bring her tea kettle. When Joseph went there she was lying naked in the bed. She suddenly started asking questions about love from Joseph like "...if he had ever been in love."
She put her hand on his hand. She told Joseph that you are beautiful and you must have a relationship with girls to which Joseph answered that for him every female is the same and he did not have any bad intentions.
Lady booby did not believe in Joseph and she continued to accuse him of having a sexual relationship with other maids. She offered Joseph to have a relationship with herself in hidden words,
" suppose a lady should happen to like you; suppose she should prefer you to all your sex."
She provoked Joseph by saying that she is naked and told him that he had bad intentions towards her. At this, Joseph became angry and told her that, " he never had the least evil design against her."
She gave an offer to Joseph to marry her in concealed words, "Would not then you be my master?"
He made clear to her that he would "...die a thousand deaths…" before doing or having such evil desire. He told lady Booby that he is a virtuous person and he wants to preserve his chastity. Hearing the reply of Joseph she called him a villain.
"...O thou villain."
She becomes angry and told him to get out of the room.
Joseph becomes very disappointed at the rude behaviour of lady Booby Joseph did not comprehend the situation and wrote a letter to his sister Pamela Andrews. In his letter, he discussed the recent events. he told his sister that according to him Lady Booby has gone mad after her husband's death. He also pointed that he is not sure about lady Booby's intentions. He made it clear that he will do everything to preserve his chastity like his sister Pamela. He will remain sacred and will preserve his family's integrity.
