Role of promises in the Novel Mill on the Floss:
In the novel "Mill On The Floss" had a significant role. The novel revolves around the relationship between siblings, Maggie and Tom. At the beginning of the novel, we come to know about the relationship between tom and maggie and the promise which maggie made to tom that she will always have a good relationship with tom. This claim has been confirmed when Maggie sacrificed her life for Tom and they both died. Their shared grave was also the symbol of the bond between them.
Mr Tulliver made an important promise by putting his hands on the bible was also significant. Mr Tulliver compels Tom to put his hands on the Bible and make a promise to take his revenge on Mr Wakhem. Similarly, Tom also made a promise to support his father and mother. Philips, the son of Mr Wakhem made a promise to maggie to help them in the case of Mill.
However, in the plot, we saw that some promises were fulfilled and some were not. For example, Tom fulfils the promise to his mother and father. He worked hard and earned a lot to pay the debt and he also helped to maintain his father's dignity. He again joined the and worked till his death. The promise made by Philip to Maggie was not completed and Maggie died in the end.
It can be said that there was a big role of promises in the novel Mill On The Floss. These promises can be analyzed and observed in various parts of the novel. The promises in the Tulliver family are of most significant value.
